Mr. Obama is the president of the United States, and as such deserves the respect his office demands. We as the American people, however, ought not to sit silently by and watch him slowly destroy our country from the inside out with his decision-making. I have spent some time lately thinking about what to write regarding the injustices and problems in our country both related and unrelated to our President’s decisions. I believe that actor Jon Voight, in his open letter to the Washington Post, addresses an issue which must not be overlooked. Here is the link to his letter.

My New Theme

So it has been close to a year since I have last updated my blog. Bad, I know. I have plenty of excuses, even valid ones, but I won’t bore you .

I am changing the blog to relieve the pressure. I felt like I had to record, or write something…valuable, so I didn’t take the time. I have decided to turn this into a way to practice my writing. If I feel the urge to write, I will, and if not, I won’t . I want to improve my creative writing, hence the quote at the top of the page.

Every Moment

I was in a car accident yesterday. I was driving home from school and I stopped at the light at Louisiana and Paseo. I was rear-ended and my car shot into the middle of the intersection. Thankfully no one was hurt. I was blessed and protected from not getting hit while sitting in the middle of the intersection. The whole experience has really made me think. It really brought home to me my own mortality. I could be dead right now, or at the very least hospitalized with multiple injuries. We really don’t know what is going to happen next year, next month, next week, tomorrow, or even the next moment until it happens. I was standing on the sidewalk waiting for the cops to arrive and I saw for the first time how many missed chances and opportunities I had just yesterday. It made me take a hard look at my attitude towards life, and I didn’t like what I saw. I so often avoid, ignore, or put off opportunities to do things, witness to people, be a friend, give someone a hug, little things that don’t seem like a big deal, but really are. It made me realize that I have to take EVERY opportunity, every chance to tell someone they matter, tell my family I love them, tell people that no matter what they or anyone else has done or said, God loves them. No matter how hard it is, how tired you are, how discouraged, sad, hurt, whatever the reason, don’t let those opportunities pass you by. You may not have another one.

Snow in the Trees

It’s no secret that I dislike winter. The cold, the barreness, the wind…I could do without, thank you very much! The leafless trees, the lack of green, the overwhelming state of brown and grey that color the landscape; throughout the winter my eyes ache for the new life of spring, the warmth and color of summer, and the crisp vibrance of fall. But when it snows…when the bare branches are frosted with white, the stark, lifeless scenery is layered with an aura of glittery magic, a certain elegance, like a regal queen. And suddenly, winter is a wonderland of diamond-like brilliance that reminds me of why it truly is a beautiful season, as unique and necessary as the rest.

Today, several of my friends and I went and saw Valkyrie. I very much enjoyed the movie, but it also caused me to think.

There were 15 assassination attempts made to kill Adolf Hitler. And 15 failures. There was also an attempt to declare Hitler legally insane, so he could be removed from office. What are the chances of one man surviving 15 assassination attempts? How could every one of those attempts fail?

The men in Valkyrie, the ones involved in the assassination on which the movie is based, were so committed to their cause, so convinced that what they were doing was right, that they were willing to sacrifice everything. Money. Prestige. Career. Honor. Family. Their very lives. I wonder, do I believe in anything enough to sacrifice everything? I hope I do; I pray if I were faced with a decision about my faith I would make the right choice, that I would have the God-given strength to give it all up for Christ. But would I? I pray so.

January 1, 2009: A New Day, A New Year

Well, it’s officially January 1, 2009. I can hear the fireworks going off outside. I wonder what this year will hold. Will the next 12 months be exciting? Difficult? Boring? Filled with happiness and joy? Depressing? A combination of everything? What will it hold for me? My family? My country? The world?

Looking forward, I will finish my freshman year at college, transfer to UNM, and begin my sophomore year. I’ll go to camp, get some ort of job in the summer and fall, go to church, YABS, and probably the H-2s, stress about school, homework and tests, laugh, cry, have fun, feel depressed; life will go on as usual. Why is the New Year such a big deal? Do we celebrate because it is a fresh start? Because we want to send the old year off with a bang? Or is it because, good or bad, joyous or terrible, wonderful or sad, we can never retrieve the past? Do we celebrate to herald the coming of the New Year? Or to hide our secret melancholy over the loss of the past year? I am not sure.

Whatever the reasons for celebration, we will never regain 2008, but 2009, whatever it holds for us, lies ahead, a clean slate. So have a blessed, wonderful, safe, joyous year. Welcome 2009!
